JUNE TO SEPTEMBER · RAIN IS THE POINT

Monsoon drives worth the wipers

Most travel lists tell you to hide from the monsoon. They are wrong about these seven. These are places where the rain is the attraction: waterfalls that only exist in the wet, ghats that fill with cloud, and forest roads at their absolute greenest. Roads are slower in the rain; every drive time below is an honest monsoon estimate.

Western Ghats

Agumbe & the Someshwara rainforest

The Cherrapunji of the south: king cobra country, forest waterfalls and sunsets over an ocean of green.

The rain capital of the south. The ghat road from Thirthahalli climbs into cloud, and every bend in monsoon has a waterfall hanging off it.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan base: Agumbe / Thirthahalli 3+ days
Mangalore or Udupi to Agumbe (2-3 hrs up the ghat). Thirthahalli side via Shimoga is the gentler road.

The Sahyadri fort country: Bhimashankar to Kothaligad

Shivaji's hill forts, origin rivers and monsoon-soaked plateaus within a long weekend of two cities.

Shivaji's forts were built for this season. From Mumbai or Pune, a two-hour drive puts you on a mist-wrapped summit with origin rivers running full.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan base: Bhimashankar / Karjat side 3+ days
Pune to Bhimashankar (3 hrs) or Mumbai to Karjat (2 hrs by local train), then to the fort bases.

Western Ghats

The Konkan interior: Amboli, Tilari & Sawantwadi

India's herping capital, a forest the size of a district, and a craft town under the ghat's western lip.

The ghat's western lip in full spate: Amboli's falls are roadside, the Tilari backwaters are overflowing, and the herping is at its peak.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan base: Amboli / Sawantwadi 3+ days
Belgaum or Goa airport to Sawantwadi (1.5-2 hrs), then up to Amboli (1 hr).

Goa's hinterland: Netravali, Tambdi Surla & the eastern ghats

The Goa beyond the beach: 12th-century forest temples, sanctuary waterfalls and villages that never sold a ticket.

Goa's forest interior in the wet: Tambdi Surla's temple in dripping rainforest, Netravali's falls at full volume, and zero beach crowds.

best: year-round base: Sanguem / Netravali 3+ days
Margao or Dabolim to Sanguem (1.5 hrs), then into the sanctuary belt. The beach is 90 minutes and a world away.

Bengaluru Weekend

Bisle ghat & the Sakleshpur rainforest edge

The Western Ghats' least-known grand viewpoint: three mountain ranges and a river valley from one rock, an hour past Sakleshpur's crowds.

The Bisle viewpoint in monsoon is a waterfall of mist; when it clears for thirty seconds, three ranges show at once. The reserve road is the drive.

best: year-round base: Bisle / Sakleshpur 2+ days
Bengaluru to Bisle via Hassan and Sakleshpur (about 250 km, 5.5 hrs). The last 25 km is reserve-forest road.

Himachal Pradesh

Pabbar valley & the Chanshal crossing (Rohru)

Apple orchards giving way to a 3,750 m pass and villages that see a dozen visitors a year.

The Pabbar valley in rain: the river runs glacial-white, the apple country drips, and the Chanshal pass road is an adventure even for Himachal.

best: May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct base: Rohru / Chirgaon 3+ days
Shimla to Rohru via Theog, Kotkhai and Kharapathar (about 160 km, 4-5 hrs). Rohru to Chanshal top via Larot is another 45 km of rough climbing.

Kashmir

Gurez & Tulail: the far side of the Razdan

Kashmir's great beyond: wooden villages on the Kishanganga, cut off by snow half the year.

Kashmir's far valley gets a gentler monsoon than the ghats: the Kishanganga runs slate-green, the meadows are waist-high, and the Razdan pass is drama daily.

best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct base: Dawar 4+ days
Srinagar to Dawar via Bandipora and the Razdan Pass (3,557 m), about 5-6 hrs. The pass closes with snow, roughly November to May.
